Without Feathers

I'll get straight to the point. The new Stills album is by far the biggest musical disappointment of the year. I'm really glad I had a chance to hear it before spending any money on it.

Anyway, here's the supposed background story... A great band from Montreal releases a really good first album. It gets alot of critical acclaim, makes them moderately popular, and predictably, has it's share of detractors that label them as things like "unoriginal" or "new-new wave". They probably took those criticisms (or themselves) too seriously, so they decide to make some changes. First they kick out their guitarist. Then their drummer, who co-wrote material for the first album says "if you don't let me sing and play guitar, I'll quit"; and they actually agree to this! (thanks Dave Grohl - now every drummer has a huge ego and wants to sing). Then they proceed to make an album full of boring mid-tempo crap. I know, I've played stuff from it on my radio show, but that was just because I needed to fill my Canadian content quota.

The album is called 'Without Feathers'. I guess this an attempt to further distance themselves from the first album, which has feathers all over the cover. As if the music doesn't do that enough! In trying to be different, they went too far away from their original sound, while also ignoring everything that worked for them in the past. It sounds like a completely different band; and that's not a good thing in this case.

Cheap drinks

You probably know by now that the club at which I DJ has some pretty good drink deals on the night that I'm there ($2 domestic bottles and bar shots all night). Well, wouldn't it be nice to know where in London you can drink inexpensively on any given night of the week?

I think so. So, I've created the London Guide To Cheap Drinks. You can check it out here: http://www.stillepost.ca/boards/index.php?topic=50008.0. If you know of any deals that should be added to it, just e-mail me and I'll post it for everyone's benefit.

Last night, she said...

The Strokes concert last night was amazing. We were on the floor, about 4 rows of people back from the stage. It wasn't sold out, but it was pretty packed in the JLC. The band was really tight, the sound and lights were amazing, and they picked some great songs to play for us.

Even cooler was the fact that we got to meet Julian and Fab after the show and talk to them for a while. Fab said to my friend Jesse "hey dude, I saw you rocking out during the show". That was pretty sweet. Then they all got in mini-vans and sped off. Next stop: Winnipeg; and that one is sold out.

Anyway, here's a review of the show from the local newspaper... http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/Today/ThursdayTicket/2006/05/11/1574170-sun.html

Another one

Another big concert announcement for June was made this morning. Radiohead will be playing two shows at Toronto's Hummingbird Centre on June 7th and 8th. Tickets are $71.65 each + SC, and will be available from Ticketmaster on Saturday May 6th at 10am.

The band is currently finishing up their 7th album, which should be released later this year. I've read conflicting reports as to whether or not they'll be playing any of the new material on this tour, but let's hope that they do.
