Yeah!

I picked up the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, "Show Your Bones" yesterday after work. I've listened to it a couple times through already, and it's pretty awesome.

I read a review of the album on Monday that said "Nick Zinner's guitar sounds smaller and less commanding" on the album. You can probably never have enough of his guitar craziness, and sometimes it is too quiet in the mix; but when it's there it's great. Also, track four steals lyrics from LL Cool J, which is interesting. Either way, it's up there with the best albums released so far this year, and you can expect to hear me play it a lot at the club.

Speaking of the club, they've started serving a new beer from Brazil called Brahma. New to Canada that is - it's been around in Brazil for years. It's pretty good. You should try it.

March 25th show!

So, I'm going to start presenting some concerts in London. The first will be next Saturday (March 25th) at Action/Reaction Studios. It's upstairs at 402 Richmond Street (corner of Richmond & Dundas).

The lineup is great - local power pop group The Canons are on the bill. I've also got a couple of rock n' roll bands coming in from out of town to play. Friends of mine, Evil Doers from Toronto, and their friends Phantasm from upstate New York. Here's some links so you can check them all out...

It will be a great show. Doors open at 9:00, the music starts at 10:00; it's only $3 to get in, and it's a BYOB event. Sweet! Hope to see ya there.

Oh, and I should also mention that both Evil Doers and Phantasm will be performing short sets at Grooves Records that afternoon starting at 4:00.

Bad requests

So, at the last club I worked at I'd get requests every night for Metallica. I don't own any Metallica, and can't stand them, so I never played them.

Well now it's requests for kitsch-y songs like 'Summer of 69' by Bryan Adams, or 'Jesse's Girl' by Rick Springfield! What's up with that?!

For the record, I don't play cheesy novelty songs. You're not at a wedding, and I'm not a Karoaoke machine. But if you have a request for some good rock n roll, like say Ryan Adams, I'll always gladly play it. Long live good rock n roll!

The Strokes

You may or may not have already heard this, but I thought I would post it here anyway.

The Strokes have announced the Canadian dates of their current tour supporting their new album 'First Impressions Of Earth' (which, by the way, is outstanding). Anyway, they're going to be playing at the John Labatt Centre on May 10th. Yes, you read that correctly - The Strokes are going to be playing in London! That's huge!

No word yet on when tickets will go on sale or who the opening act(s) will be. The pre-sale for the Toronto show started today, so it shouldn't be too long. Because the JLC's tickets aren't sold through Ticketmaster, you'll have to get them here: http://tinyurl.com/zrc3s. You can probably expect to pay around $40, as tickets for the US shows are going for around $30. You can also expect to hear a lot of Strokes songs tomorrow night at the club.

Editors

So I decided to check out the Editors, even after hearing nothing but bad reviews. On first listen, they sound like a blatant rip-off of Interpol; but after a few listens all of their influences become more evident. Doves, Joy Division, the Smiths, U2, and of course the aforementoned dark rockers from NYC.

Really though, if your influences are obvious, and they're good, and then you make a good album that sounds like those artists; I'm fine with that. If you copy the best, you're bound to make something at least half-decent.

The jury's still out on just how good the album is - I haven't listened to it enough. But I can say that all the bad reviews I was hearing were greatly exaggerated. You can listen to a couple of their songs here... www.editorsofficial.co.uk/music.html. Next up on my list of "albums-to-listen-to-that-sound-like-Interpol-at-first" is She Wants Revenge.

Last Thursday

So you can tell that this past week was slack week for UWO and Fanshawe students, 'cause the club wasn't nearly as busy as it normally is. Even so, it was still way busier than the last club I worked at.

Those that were there got to hear me spin tracks from Jack White's new band, The Raconteurs; and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' new single, Gold Lion! The former will be released in May, while the latter comes out March 28th. Sweet!
