Last night (early this morning) I sat in with Chris McManus on his 'Indie Dance Party' show on CHRW. Because of the late night setting, I had a chance to spin a set of stuff that I would normally play at the club and not on my morning radio show. Here's a list of the songs I played...
VHS or Beta - Night On Fire
The Rakes - Retreat (Phones remix)
Bloc Party - Banquet (Phones disco edit)
Put The Rifle Down - Dragged Across The Gulf
Test Icicles - Circle.Square.Triangle.
Thom Yorke - The Clock
Four Tet - A Joy
Interpol - Public Pervert (Carlos D remix)
Mew - Special

Guest DJ
Tonight at the club I'll have a special guest DJ in to spin a set. Chris McManus has a radio show on 94.9 CHRW from 12-2 am on Thursday mornings called 'Indie Dance Party', and he's going to bring his great musical taste to GT's for you. You'll find more information on Chris and his show here... http://www.playingitcool.ca/
Also tonight, we'll continue the CD giveaways. We've got copies of the new Cites In Dust and Keane albums to give away all night, plus as always, the best drink deals in town.
Oh, and next Thursday, June 29th, we'll finally be doing that Vines givaway that I was talking about a while back (CD's, clothing, etc.)

Without Feathers
I'll get straight to the point. The new Stills album is by far the biggest musical disappointment of the year. I'm really glad I had a chance to hear it before spending any money on it.
Anyway, here's the supposed background story... A great band from Montreal releases a really good first album. It gets alot of critical acclaim, makes them moderately popular, and predictably, has it's share of detractors that label them as things like "unoriginal" or "new-new wave". They probably took those criticisms (or themselves) too seriously, so they decide to make some changes. First they kick out their guitarist. Then their drummer, who co-wrote material for the first album says "if you don't let me sing and play guitar, I'll quit"; and they actually agree to this! (thanks Dave Grohl - now every drummer has a huge ego and wants to sing). Then they proceed to make an album full of boring mid-tempo crap. I know, I've played stuff from it on my radio show, but that was just because I needed to fill my Canadian content quota.
The album is called 'Without Feathers'. I guess this an attempt to further distance themselves from the first album, which has feathers all over the cover. As if the music doesn't do that enough! In trying to be different, they went too far away from their original sound, while also ignoring everything that worked for them in the past. It sounds like a completely different band; and that's not a good thing in this case.

Upcoming giveaways!
Over the next few weeks, we're going to be giving away a lot of free CD's at the club...
This Thursday, we're giving away copies of the new Angels & Airwaves album, 'We Don't Need To Whisper'. Bright Eyes will be in town in June for a show at Centennial Hall, so on June 1st and 8th, we'll have a bunch of copies of his last two albums to give away. On June 15th, we'll have copies of the new Sonic Youth album, 'Rather Ripped' and the new AFI album, 'Decemberunderground'. And, on June 22nd, we'll give away copies of the new albums from Keane, and a great band from Toronto called Cities In Dust.
So, there's somthing for everyone's musical tastes there. Personally, I'm most excited about the new Sonic Youth and Cities In Dust albums. All you have to do for a chance to win is come see me at the DJ booth, and fill out a ballot.
Oh, and the Vines giveaway that we were going to do this week has been postponed until sometime in late June. I'll post the exact date here when I know.
